On November 3, 2024, the Government of Japan announced the recipients of the 2024 Autumn Imperial Decorations. Among those honored was Mitchell Akira Kawasaki, President of the Canadian Japanese Cultural Centre of Hamilton and owner/head sensei at Kawasaki Rendokan, who was awarded the prestigious Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays. This esteemed recognition highlights Kawasaki’s significant contributions to promoting Japanese culture in Canada, as well as fostering friendship and goodwill between Japan and Canada.
The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays is one of Japan’s highest honors, recognizing individuals who have made outstanding contributions in areas such as cultural exchange, international cooperation, and the promotion of Japanese values. Kawasaki’s dedication to these ideals has greatly enhanced the mutual respect and cultural understanding between Japan and Canada.
In response to the announcement, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, sent a congratulatory message to Kawasaki, expressing his appreciation for Kawasaki’s efforts in strengthening the bonds of friendship between the two nations. Kawasaki’s leadership at the Canadian Japanese Cultural Centre of Hamilton, as well as his decades of leadership in Judo, have made him a prominent figure in the promotion of Japanese culture within the Canadian community.
The official ceremony took place on February 28, 2025, at the residence of the Consul General of Japan in Toronto, where Kawasaki received his decoration in person.
