June Takahashi (née Hayami) passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026.

June Takahashi co-founded Takahashi Dojo in 1969 alongside her husband, Masao. Over the following 55 years, she devoted herself to developing judoka of every age and level—from recreational to World and Olympic competitors—including her four children, Allyn, Phil, Ray, and Tina, as well as her grandchildren.

A shichidan, certified IJF kata judge, coach, and referee, June contributed to the sport at every level. She volunteered extensively with Judo Ontario and Judo Canada over decades of service. She co-authored Mastering Judo, was inducted into the Judo Ontario Hall of Fame, held Judo Ontario Lifetime Member status, and was honoured by the Province of Ontario with a Special

Achievement Award in 1990. Her contributions to the growth of judo in Canada were immeasurable.

She was the beloved wife of Masao James Takahashi (1929–2020), and is survived by her brothers, George and Hiro; her children, Allyn, Ray, and Tina; her grandchildren, Christy, Jenny, Emi, Mariko, Steven, Adam, Torin, and Liam; and her great-grandchildren, Alice, Philly, Lily, Kato, Miya, Talula, and Tomio. She was predeceased by her son, Phil (2020).

On behalf of the Judo Ontario, we extend our deepest condolences to the Takahashi family.  June Takahashi was a pillar of our judo community—her lifelong dedication, leadership, shaped generations of judoka. Her legacy will continue to live on through the many lives she touched.
