Zupancic wins gold in 70 kilos

Montreal, February 3, 2008 (Sportcom) Kelita Zupancic of Whitby, Ont., won the gold medal this weekend at the d'Arlon Open judo tournament in Belgium with a victory in the under-20 women's 70 kilos division. Zupancic won her six bouts by ippon including a victory over Luiza Gainutdinova of Ukraine in the final. ''I'm very pleased,'' said Zupancic, currently tuning up for the world junior championships. ''It was my first tournament this year and to win all my bouts shows I'm on the right path.''

Kelita trains at the Formokan Judo Club in Oshawa, under the direction of Charlie Formosa. "As President of Judo Ontario, I'm very pleased for Kelita and all the people who've helped her along the way. Kelita's excellent result shows us that Judo in Ontario is moving forward and we have both the training and expertice to help our athletes medal in international competition."
