Kyle Reyes in the first round

Friday August 12th, 2016

The Canadian athlete in the -100kg division, Kyle Reyes, lost in the first round to the dutch Henk Grol.

It was a tough fight for a 22 year old, against a two time Olympic medalist and three time world champion in the division.

Kyle is the first Canadian to ever win a World Juniors Championship, training in Japan with some of the best judoka in the world. Admittedly, he said that the dutch athlete was strong and his style of judo was different than expected, so he looks forward to spending the next bit of his training across the globe, gaining international experience with all sorts of different cultures.

“It has been a great honour to represent Canada,” he added. “I wanted to win, I wanted a medal for Canada, but today wasn’t my day. Maybe next time.”
