Friday November 23rd, 2007
Team Ontario was well represented at three international tournaments over the month of October and November. Lead by Head Coach, Craig Weldon and Manager, Brian Kalsen, Team Ontario gained some valuable experience at the US Open which was held in Gwinnett, Georgia. Eleven athletes took part from Ontario with top eight finishes by Andrea Madgett (7th) -48 kg and Renee Guggino (5th) -52 kg. Over 350 competitors from a number of countries competed over three days. In addition, Barry Williams won a silver medal in the middle weight masters category and a bronze medal in the open masters category. The following weekend saw over 35 Team Ontario athletes compete at the annual Rendez-Vous Canada tournament held in Montreal, Quebec. Ontario did extremely well bringing home four medals and a couple other top eight finishes. Ontario was lead by Head Coach, Bob Zettl and Manager, Eddie Zupancic. Formokan Judo Club lead the way with two medals, Ian Alexander (silver) +100 kg and Kelita Zupancic (bronze) -70 kg. In addition, strong performances from Katy Bryant (silver) -70 kg and Derek Langlois (silver) -55 kg. Special mention goes out to Renee Guggino, (5th) -52 kg, for another top five finish in back-to-back weekends and Stephanie Lampman (7th) in the -63 kg division. Following the tournament, eleven athletes stayed for a three day National Training Camp. Following the RVC training camp, a small group of Canadian athletes left for Europe to compete in Sweden and Finland. Ontario's Kelita Zupancic was part of the Canadian delegation. Competing in two senior tournaments back-to-back in Europe was going to give Kelita some valuable experience. Kelita made the best of her European trip winning a bronze medal in the Finnish Open which was held in Vantaa, Finland and going head-to-head with current World Silver medalist, Ronda Rousey, in the Swedish Open. Unfortunately after Kelita's loss to Ronda, she did not advance as Ronda lost her next match thus eliminating her from competition.
