Judo Ontario 2017 Open Nationals Results

  This past weekend for the second year in a row the 2017 Open Nationals took place at the Calgary Olympic Oval. A very determined Ontario team took to the tatami to challenge themselves against the rest of Canada. The Ontario team started strongly on the first day with an impressive 8 medals in the Kata competition. Of special note is Shane Rooney collecting an outstanding 2 gold and 2 silver medals.

The second day had the U18 and Veterans battling each other for spots on the podium. Aidos Sapenov, Keagan Young, and Sava Antic were all able to reach the top step and snag gold medals.

U16 and U21 athletes flexed their muscles on the third day and Team Ontario was able secure 11 medals including 4 gold medals. Leading the way for Ontario with dominating performances were gold medals winners Grace Petsnick, Amr Abdelrehim, Christian Dametto, and Shady el Nahas.

The fourth and final day of this year’s competition had the Senior age group testing their skill. Brothers Mohab and Shady el Nahas helped propel Ontario to another 8 medals with gold medals in -90kg and -100kg respectively. Akshay Rajaram was also able to add to Judo Ontario gold medal haul with a gold medal in the men’s -55kg division.

The 2017 Open Nationals closed with the banquet and awards night. Kelita Zupancic garnered the Judo Canada’s 2017 Most Outstanding Senior Female award. Shady el Nahas was named Judo Canada’s Most Outstanding U21 Male and also received his Shodan by way of batsugan. Finally but not least 15 year old Keagan Young by way of batsugan was awarded his shodan.
