First Day Results for the 2016 Veterans World Judo Championships


  Canada and Ontario had some impressive results on the first day of action at the Veteran World Judo Championships in Fort Lauderdale. Canada had 5 men competing with 4 of them coming from Ontario.

Herman Vermeiren from Kawasaki Rendokan in Hamilton won a special Gold medal competing in the 80+ year old division.

Ronald Angus from Full Circle Judo club in Burlington placed silver in the -100kg M7 division. Ron beat competitors from USA and Poland by ippon before succumbing in the final by a questionable shido call to a competitor from Spain.

Daniel Bird from Kawasaki Rendokan competing in the M6 division -90kg over powered competitors from Venezuela and USA before losing in the bronze medal match to Finland.

Steve Starnes from Newmarket Budokan and Sho Jin Judo Club competing in the M9 -90kg division dominated USA in his first match of the day before losing a close match in the semifinals also to the  USA  and then in the bronze medal match to GBR.

The fifth competitor from Canada Ralph Ibanez from Saskatchewan won the Gold medal in the -66kg M8 division.

Tomorrow Jeff Allen, Kevin Ban, and Mark Wilson from Ontario are going for the podium in the M1 to M3 divisions.
