It was an exciting week for the Ontario Judo Team at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax. The Judo Ontario Team was made up of 13 talented and strong athletes, coaches Dave Burt and Tracy Angus, and manager Aartje Sheffield.
St. Mary's University was the site of the three days of competition. The individual competitions were run over two days on the Wednesday and Thursday. The grand finale, Team Competitions, were held on Saturday.
During the individual competitions, Ontario was able to secure two GOLD medals through the incredible performances of Nicole Jenicek (-57kg) and William (Cody) Dwyer (-100kg).
Briana McCracken (-52kg) and Jonah Burt (-81kg) did us proud by each having a fantastic day and bringing home SILVER medals
Bronze medals were won by Monika Burgess (-63kg), Jaya Creavalle (-78kg), Cynthia Beleno-Stitt (+78kg), Zachary Burt (-73kg), and Andrew Balach (-90kg).
Although they did not come home with medals, it is also important to recognize the effort and determination of Tyler Kamino (-60kg), who finished 5th, Luke Heatherington (-66kg) who finished 7th, MacKenzie Burt (-48kg) our early bloomer, and Amanda Felker (-70kg).
During the Team Events on Saturday, The Judo Ontario Women's Team won GOLD in a dramatic nail-biter against Quebec. the excitment was intense! The Men's Team, gave a superb and determined effort, but were unable to advance in the competition.
Special thanks should go out to Judo Ontario's referees, Tom Hino and Chuck Lee. Without the expertise and dedication of the referees, the competition could not take place. We were well represented by Tom and Chuck!
Congratulations to all athletes, coaches and referees. The Judo Ontario membership has much to be proud of!
